President's Message on Rebranding

May 5, 2020

Dear HKSFA Members and Colleagues,

Hope you and your family are keeping well.

Rebrand our Society

After taking into account the members’ views and feedback (including the rebranding consultation message in March), the Board of Directors has approved on April 20, 2020 to change the Society logo to “CFA Society Hong Kong”, while keeping the entity / legal name, The Hong Kong Society of Financial Analysts Limited, unchanged. This logo change is an important event for our Society. It will strengthen the brand by a closer association with the global leader in the investment community and will allow the Society to tap into the resources of the CFA Institute global family as well as other industry practitioners. A task force consisting of both Board of Directors and office staff has been formed.  The task force will work closely with CFA Institute to formulate an action plan to communicate the logo change with our members, financial industry, regulators and the public.

Stay relevant
In the current unprecedented situation, more events have been turned virtual than ever.  These virtual offerings, including webinars, online conferences and gatherings, are likely to become part of our life even when the plague is gone.  The restriction for us to go outside having in-person group activities should not stop us from growing “inside” and staying relevant with our industry and community.  To this end, our office staff and volunteers have not only prepared virtual events, but also planned for potential in-person programmes as and when we can meet face-to-face again.

In view of the COVID-19 outbreak, CFA Institute is also transitioning the educational events to virtual (webinars) and creating the APAC Regional Webinars series to continue supporting our Society's programming for the members, candidates and the public at large. CFA Institute is inviting speakers to give interactive webinars to cover hard core investing topics as well as soft skills, leadership, career development, etc. There will be webinars targeting global, regional, and sub-regional audience.  Our Society has worked with CFA Institute to host webinars in the past and will continue to do so in the future, especially those most relevant to our local markets. As part of a big family, we encourage our members to join and support these webinars.

CFA Institute had a webinar on April 30, 2020 by Russell Napier (financial historian & author) on the topic “Multi-Trillion-Dollar Government COVID-19 Debts: Is Financial Repression the Endgame (or the Solution)?”  I met Russell in the mid-90s when he was a top-ranked Asia Equity Strategist who has been well followed by global fund managers. Two upcoming APAC Regional Webinars by CFA Institute are as follows:
1.
May 19, 2020 - From Breakdown to Opportunities: MedTech powers rapid Recovery from COVID-19? (Speakers:  Virginia Chan and Jack Wong)
2.
May 25, 2020 - Lessons from “Radical Uncertainty” for coping with COVID-19 and future pandemics (Speakers: Lord Mervyn King and Brian D. Singer, CFA)
