HKSFA is pleased to welcome Mr. David Costello, Consul General at Consulate General of Ireland, HK, to present at our luncheon on the topic “Brexit: the Final Countdown - an Irish Perspective”.

  • As we begin 2019, businesses in and those trading with Europe are focussed on the implication of the Brexit process.
  • From an EU perspective, ratifying the Withdrawal Agreement, as endorsed by the European Council on 25 November, remains the best, and realistically the only way to ensure an orderly UK exit.  The negotiations have been difficult and long with flexibility and compromise shown on both sides. There is no scope and no time to re-negotiate this carefully balanced Agreement.
  • However, we are not yet at the end of the road. The decision of the House of Commons on the Withdrawal Agreement is awaite and work will continue within the EU on concluding and implementing the deal.

About the Speaker:

Mr. David Costello
Consul General, Consulate General of Ireland, HK

Join David Costello, Consul General of Ireland to Hong Kong and Macau to get an insight into the state of play on the Brexit process and the challenges and opportunities arising from this once in a generational shift in the balance of relationships in Europe.  Having served as Director for Reconciliation in Ireland, during the decommissioning of loyalist weapons (2008-2010), he is well placed to offer an insight on the particular challenges of Brexit for Ireland and the peace process.
